Great article. We love rums and have to say we are sadden that we all are bickering about our rums. While we love our Virgin Islands Crucian rum we also are partial to sugar cane rums.
It is true that Eclipse Black has been d/c’d and that now we have a much more expensive “Black Barrel”. The Rum Project reviewed both and are rather disappointed. The Eclipse was 100 proof, stated age (2-7 years), more pot still flavors, and you got a full liter for perhaps $20. Now the price is just short of $30 for less rum, lower proof, less flavor and a smaller bottle.
The “Black Barrel” seems to be a younger, lesser rum. The “finishing” in deeply charred barrels is necessary to make it palatable. A real disappointment.
Having difficulty finding the liquer infused rum. I would love to try it…Where can I purchase it? I am visiting Brooklyn,NY for another 10 days and am on the hunt for your spiced rum or any of the other flavors..Please Help..
im actually a huge fan of tattoo and have found that dr. pepper cherry is the best thing to go along with, however if you cant find that regular dr. pepper is a good substitute
I actually have been drinking Tattoo with Diet Dr. Pepper (DDP) of late. I will have to try the Cherry. Thanks for the tip.
What other rums would I like if I like Tattoo?
Mas, Tattoo is a very unique, non-traditional flavor of rum. If you wanted to stick with that non-traditional flavor I would recommend something like Roaring Dan’s Rum (Michigan), Corsair Spiced Small Batch (Kentucky) or One Barrel out of Belize.
Some more unique rums that are more widely available include Pyrat XO, Kraken Black Spiced, Kilo Kai or Seven Tiki. Most, if not all, should be available online and perhaps even locally to you.
Lastly I would recommend Ye Ol Grog’s Dutch Harbor Breeze Grog or Good Morning Glory Grog (www.yeolgrogdistillery.com/) out of Alaska if you can get your hands on any of it. If you really want to try something different their Dutch Harbor Breeze Grog has a wild mixture of cinnamon, sassafras and other spices that is definitely a one of the kind flavor.
where can I find a bottle of the Paraiso?
Damn! I been up & Down lookin for a Bottle of Orange Cruzan Rum. Had No Idea it was DisContinued because of the Simple Fact that the Damn WebSite has it Posted as a Flavor you can still Purchase. I’ve seen the 750ml in Stores but I want the 1Lt Bottle for My Collection but Now I see why I can’t Find the Damn thing lol
Got some at christmas, taste like the real deal franklin county I have Had in the past. Much better than what I had from the place in anderson sc. I think that one is called palmetto moonshine. Yeah out of the two I like the copperhead snake bite. Palmetto seems like fluff.
Am interested in a new rum–Don Pancho. Where can it be purchased ?
(1) New Jersey liquor stores
(3) directly from you
What is the cost?
Please advise and thanks–Claudia
I too am looking forward to the availability of Francisco “Don Pancho” Fernandez latest rums. I have not seen it available in the US yet. What I read at the end of last year was that they would be available in early 2014. Typically new US releases are made available in California, New York, and/or Florida first.
Terlato Wines has added Panama’s Don Pancho Origenes rum to its burgeoning Artisan Spirits porftolio. Starting in early 2014, Terlato will be rolling out Don Pancho’s 30-year-old ($425 a 750-ml.) and 18-year old editions ($90) in select markets around the U.S. The importer will be adding an 8-year-old offering in the near future. https://www.facebook.com/OrigenesRum
Just tried my first bottle of this concoction … delicious! Like a lighter version of a dark and stormy, but with the tiniest hint of cayenne. Would make an absolutely outstanding summer cooler. A votre sante!
I bought a bottle last month while in New Orleans for Mardi Gras but I have yet to sample it. I’ll have to make a point of opening it when I return from the vacation.
Love Blackwell, got some in jamaica, aged or not like it better than apple tons. smooth with light burn
Our Rum Trader knows how to find the rum!
These luxury rums are only available in a handful of leading liquor stores in Miami and New York.
Late i know but i like it with Sprite 🙂 (eventually with MountainDew) on ice…
I received this rhum today as a recommendation from Cask, in San Francisco. It came with another bottle of rum from Haiti. I had a friend in the area and they brought them home for me.
Ok, I’ll be honest. When I opened the bottle the first smell was…. wow, what is that? I asked a friend and they thought of Olives. My wife thought of Pickles and Saltwater.. odd yes? I thought… raw sugarcane at the mills in Hawaii when I lived there. I honestly was a little reluctant to taste it but, being a rum bar owner, all have to be tried, good or ill. I have to say, I did manage to drink a couple of oz. with a cube of ice but it wasn’t easy. I’m not a white rum drinker by nature, I prefer the golden and maybe a spice once and a while. But again, it was recommend.. I give it low marks in my book for now but… I want to try it with the recipes that were on the bottle, like the Mai Tai and the Ti Punch. I’ve usually found that white rhums were mixers, generally and only a few have made it to my “Top shelf” of rhums. Namely, John Watlings, Papa’s Pillar and Edwin Charley’s Transformation, but, again… I’ll leave the ticket out and try this with the mixers…
I also drive my wife crazy with unplanned liquor store stops while we are driving to go places. She tolerates my craziness.
In my travels I have found one old bottle of Zacapa XO with the red and gold cardboard box for $57. I have found some Cacique and a few bottles of Oronoco rum. I have also found a small supply of Tommy Bahamas Golden Sun and White Sands that were left over. There were a few 1.75 liters ( massive bottles) , 750ml and a few smaller bottles. I have found a few Cruzan Rum creams and was able to obtain some Cacique Antiguo and a rare bottle of Santa Theresa Bicentenario from venezuela. I will search for this Sea Wynde and let you know if I get lucky.
That’s great to hear. I thought I might be the only person crazy enough to drive around town in search of old new stock. You described some great finds. I too have spied some of the large Tommy Bahamas 1.75L but most are still full MSRP (or higher). Keep on the hunt and feel free to share any future finds!
We have come along a bit since your post. We have 5 rums available now: White, Wicked, Gold, Spiced, and our new Black Spiced. Our brand is “The Devil’s Own.” We decided against Seven Devils as there is a rum already with that brand name. Our tasting room is open now as well. There is a great deal more information on our facebook page if you are curious. I post everything there.
Thank you for your support,
I’ll check our blog out. I look forward to reading about what y’all have got going on.
This is quite possibly the most disgusting alcoholic beverage I have purchased.
Yes, it’s not one of my favorites either.
Very interesting comments, very fortunate fellow , I wish someone would give me a collection like that.
I too have the same item on which it says that it was presented to the RD collectors club with a Ltd Ed, of 5ooo world wide, is this any different to the one you have?
My main interest was to determine a market value as I would now like to sell mine.
Thank you for a amusing story.
If I remember from the research I did at the time, the empty bottle was selling for around $100 and a full bottle was selling for around $400. That would include the box and the packaging.
Sounds like it’s time to start another batch!
Dear Rum Trader, On behalf of John Watling’s Distillery we thank you for your positive review. We would like to clarify that we never serve cocktails to uniformed police. However, what we do is provide our police force with non-alcoholic fruit punch whenever they visit the distillery. As you can imagine it gets quite hot here during summer and the police on bikes need to hydrate during the day. We support our force by allowing them to get free water and fruit punch whenever they want. Through this program our area has become a safe area within Nassau where tourists regularly walk up in safety to enjoy our hospitality. Best regards, Pepin
Thank you Pepin for the clarification. Glad to hear that visitors can tour the distillery in a safe environment. We had a great time on our tour and I encourage others to drop in for a visit. Everyone we encountered was extremely friendly and professional and the rum was excellent. In fact, my last bottle of Buena Vista is sitting by my keyboard as I type this. Cheers!
Got lucky again!! Found a bottle of Sea Wynde, but even better were the three bottles ( two with box ) of the old Pyrat Planters Gold. The one bottle without the box was dusty, dirty, but still sealed, that one will be for the tasting.
The bottling numbers are 12,898, 12,990 and the third has no bottling number, maybe it fell off. All in all, I was lucky. Dusty finds are still out there.
That’s a good find! The Planters Pyrat are really hard to come by these days. I drank some Patron Pyrat this weekend. It’s pretty good too.
I recently found three more Sea Wynde’s at my local Total Wine. I use my lunch hour to visit hard-to-find spirit stores; I’m always on the lookout.
Grapefruit, sounds Interesting…..
Found two bottle of Myer’s Legend Rum in Houston, but they wouldn’t ship. So close, yet so far. Well I got lucky, a buddy of mine went there for training and was able to pick them both up for me ( THANKS Chris). I have been looking to add Legend Rum to my collection for a long time. Moving forward, now I’d like to score some Gran Blason and the elusive Plantation Venezuela 1992. As always, I’m on the lookout too!
Want to try this !
Thanks for stopping by the Yolo Rum tent and taking some time to chat with us!
YOLO RUM Enjoyed talking with you too. We’ll have to talk more about your great rum & great motto!
Thanks! Absolutely! We would be more than happy. I enjoyed your write-up on the festival.
Curious local wondering if you have a distributor selected. Manager of a restaurant, was thinking of maybe carrying your product. Thanks.
Red Harbor Rum is being distributed in South Carolina by Republic National Distributing. There website: http://www.rndc-usa.com/about/map/southcarolina.asp

Bacardi Rum doesn’t taste the same I’ve been drinking Bacardi Rum for about 45 years
I totally agree the new labeling and the taste have changed and certainly not gor the better why when it was working would you change it. I have been drinking Bacardi all my adult life and have not enjoyed the taste at all. I have never had a hangover before but the last drink I had made me very ill. The taste to me tastes like home brew or a bacardi that has been poured from the same shot glass that was used for a rum not a believer at all that ths taste has not changed
David & Debra…I have not tried Bacardi poured from the new bottle. I will have to pick up a bottle and do a side-by-side comparison. I will post the results of what I find.
I have been drinking Bacardi Gold for as long as I can remember and still enjoy the great taste.
My concern is the change in the “capping” of your 1.75 ltr. bottle.
The meal cap and collar have proven to be a disaster for me, as I require a Walnut nut cracker tool to open.
Initially I struggled with “Breaking” the seal by hand, but found that when the seal was cracked, the bottom of my baby finger would get cut on the metal edges of the collar .
Personally, I think this is/was, the worst change you could have made….
I have kept an old bottle with the plastic cap and pour the contents of the new bottle into it … Very Inconvenient!!!!
43 Treelawn Blvd.,
Living in ohio my wife and i enjoy Tatoo the best with Vernors. Not Ginger Ale but Vernors. Goes well with any cola also. Have not found too many recipes for mixed drinks for Tatoo.
I still think that Malibu lime was the best. I would give anything for a bottle.
Hi. Do you export Cockspur Splash to the UK?
According to the Cockspur Rum website, Cockspur Pineapple Coconut Splash is currently only available in Barbados. I have not heard any reports yet about it being exported.
Island breeze Bacardi was one of my favorite got it from Puerto Rico all the time. Know where to buy it
Bacardi Island Breeze launched sometime in 2009. Bacardi stopped producing it sometime in 2011 (according to my research). If you locate any it would be old stock that a retailer has not sold. My local retailer has sold through his stock but I occasionally will stumble across a bottle. I know that I saw a few bottles at Cash’s Liquor on my recent trip to Destin, FL. I’m not sure if they ship or not.
I agree I don’t know if it’s all in my head but I think that it does taste different. Has Bacardi changed something?
When my wife and I were in DR, we purchased Cubaney 15 yr rum on an excursion and loved it… where/how can I buy it here in the USA??
Thanks for stopping by. Ron Cubaney is available in a few states: Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Colorado, and New York. If you live in or visit any of these states I would recommend contacting the retail outlet in advance to have them place a special order for you to assure it is in stock. I searched for online retailers but did not find any in my initial search.
I own the bottle in question. The only problem is that the tax stamp split ( is torn) from dryness. The bottle has never been opened. None of the contents have ever been “sampled”.
Just bought a new bottle of Bacardi White Rum and it is definitely different from a two year old bottle that I have. Even the Piña Colada mix can’t mask the bitterness of the new bottle. I’m hoping it’s just a bad batch.
All these hamsters are so beautiful. I gosoto them very much. I hope to see more people enjoying these beautiful pets
The taste has changed dramatically! I can’t stand the new “bacardi” or whatever their passing off as Bacardi. Taste like cheap vodka to me. And its sad cause Bacardi was my go to rum. I store search for the old labeled bottles ☺
Made in cuba now with cuban water
I love the rum but where can I buy in the US ? I can not find anywhere.
I spoke to Don Papa representatives earlier this year and they were actively seeking a U.S. distributor. I know that they have been quite active in the European market in 2015 and I expect that they will announce something for the US market in 2016.
Just came accross your site…its music to my ears..Im a Londoner living in Barcelona following my passion, intriducing Artisan Drinks to boutique hotels, cocktail bars, etc,,as well as runni9ng a Premium Cocktail service where we stage events at galleries, festivals, yachts…I am now looking to stage an Artisan Rum Tasting event at the Modern History of Art..Ive done it in the past with Craft Gins and been hugely succesful..gaining publicity and introducing to distributors…Please is it possible to gain an insight into UK companies producing small batch Rum and perhaps send me a list?
Please let me know if this information helps. I think there are only three rums currently be distilled in England but there are a number of other unique small-batch rums produced almost entirely for the UK market. Also, there is a single rum being produced in Scotland. See details and websites below.

my question is how many people are able to buy those whisky in the world
There is a very limited retail market for a product like this but the wealthiest 1% demands extremely high-end, ultra-exclusive spirits so all the big name companies must have something to offer…see Appleton Estate 50 Year or Angostura Legacy.
Cannot find banana cream in VA abc stores Richmond
Have you asked your favorite liquor store if they can order you a bottle or two? Most are happy to place spot orders for customers. I’ve even had my local store begin stocking some of my special orders based on my spot order and recommendation.
Blue Chair Bay is distributed by Republic National in South Carolina. I looked it up and they also distribute in Virginia so it is highly likely that it is available to order. Good luck!
Dole has a terrific line of refrigerated juice blends (Orange-peach-mango, etc) and when mixed with Tattoo, makes one of the best Mai Tais I have ever tasted!
Tattoo with A&W root beer
Appleton is a gold though… this is a true DARK jamaican… and stands out in that category against Meyers and other garbage…
Appleton makes a number of great rums. There are a number of great Jamaican rums including Coruba, Hamilton, J. Wray and Nephew, etc. It’s always great to try something new!
All thats on the shelves is this carta blanca.New bottle, new label and new contents. Way back bacardi advertised itself against Dry Cane saying you can taste the diffrence well i can still taste t6he diffrence after 40yrs of regular tasting. I found a old bottle of bacardi wiv the Superior label and side by side its a diffrent aroma and TASTE, so looks like we wont be buying the new 1. Oh hum
Do you sell Foursquare spiced rum inside the US? If not can you recommend some place to get it?
R.L. Seale’s Foursquare Spiced rum is available in most states. Total Wine, a national retailer, carries it in most of their stores. If you cannot find in your local liquor store I recommend you inquire about a special order option. Most owners are happy to place a special orders.
I noticed the change in taste, I’m going to look for a new brand, taste watered down. Bicardi was my go to rum! Very disappointed.
GOOD TIMES!!! (Except for those spiced rums, woof…)
i’m glad to seee a deep culture to enjoy hot rum. In my zone culture, Italy, hot rum is drunken only with sugar, lemon and water. It’ too easy without fantasy. Good news to appreciate rum!
Yes, a Rum Hot Toddy is great on a cold day.
When making the Hot Buttered Rums, I was initially worried by the thought of adding butter to my drink. I was concerned about the healthiness of adding butter and what would happen if/when the butter congealed. Keeping the cocktail properly stirred kept the mixture consistent.
Do they still make Bacardi Select Dark Rum 1862 and if so were can I buy it I live in Farmington, mo. 63640 thanks
I apologize for not responding earlier to your question. Yes, Barcardi Select Dark is still available. If you cannot find it locally then I encourage you to ask your favorite spirits retailer if they can order it for you. It might still be available but is no longer stocked on the shelves. Remember each state has its own distribution network which add and drop brands and expressions regularly so it might no longer be available in Missouri.
I found it really inexpensively online; see the Hi-Times Wine link below). Hi-Times, as well as others, ship to most states but you will need to verify that they ship to MO.
What distillery is making these spirits, and what is the primary fermentable? Love to see a good authentic rum made in-house, is that the end goal? We would love to see a distillery in Savannah! Such an amazing city, with great people to sustain a real craft distillery. DO IT!!!!!! 🍻🇺🇸💪
I agree. We love Savannah and we’re glad that Georgia’s craft distilling is beginning to expand. I hope to visit Savannah Distillery sometime soon.
Have you tried any of the Bayou Rum?
Yes, I have. I’ve tried all of their expressions. Their Silver is a quality mixing rum and their Select is a good aged rum. The rum has become more widely accessible since signing their distribution deal with Stoli Group USA in 2015.
Thanks for the chance to win!
I have had the pleasure of visiting this distillery and sipping on this rum. The place is immaculate and the attention to detail is nothing short of perfection. The tour educates you on the different varietals of sugar cain and the symblism within the hawaiian culture. This rum is more than a rum…it is literally a cultural experience. The man in charge, Kyle, has great vision and has some of the best people around him to see that vision come true. Without question, this is the best rum in the Hawaiian Islands…sorry Koloa Rum Company!
Thank you Kimya for the first hand report. I hope to visit their distillery on our next Hawaiian visit.
Hi there, I have what I have come to find out is a very rare bottle of Appleton Rum which was bottled to commemorate Jamaica’s 25th year of independence in 1987. When I contacted Wray & Nephew in Jamaica the employee was very surprised that I had this bottle as she was told there were only 100 bottled and they were given to employees in 1987. The bottle is in unopened condition and I also have the original box that it came in. Any idea the value of this rare bottle? Please let me know at your earliest convenience. Thanks, Beth Lee
Sorry I am slow to reply. Such a bottle sounds fairly rare indeed. Without knowing it’s full lineage, and without seeing the bottle, it would be difficult to pinpoint an exact value but it could be valued anywhere between $250-$1500 US. The age of the rum, the limited availability, the box it shipped in, the “fill-line” (amount of evaporation), the bottle condition, and the rum’s color all play a part in determining value.
Greeting, I have a bottle of king of Diamonds rum from Demerara Guyana aged 12, from our Grandmothers estate, which we want to sell. Would you be interested in adding this bottle to your collection ?
Judith, I will email you directly.
We are looking for a source of CSR rum.
Have a bottle we just opened that we brought from St Kitts in 1988.
Your 1980s bottle of Cane Spirit Rothschild (CSR) rum was originally distilled in St. Kitts and is MUCH different than the overproof CSR currently being produced by Guyana’s Diamond Distillers. I myself have a few bottle of the extremely rare original CSR rum. I encourage you to truly enjoy this long forgotten rum.
The Early Days of CSR
In the 1980s, Baron Edmund de Rothschild established a distillery in St. Kitts, Nevis’ sister island. This entrepreneur was determined to create a unique cane spirit, unlike any other.
To achieve this, he did not use molasses and instead, distilled rum from cane juice. Then, he developed a filtration system to remove 99% of fusel alcohols stemming from the fermentation stage. The result: CSR (Cane Spirit Rothschild).
CSR was known for its purity, making it a superior mixing rum, without the side effect of hangovers.
The sugar industry progressively declined in St. Kitts throughout the 1990s, changing the outlook for CSR. In 1996, Demerara Distillers of Guyana purchased the brand and distillery. Although CSR Rum is still blended and bottled in St. Kitts, the rum is now more Guyanese than Kittitian.
This quintessential island spirit has made a name for itself in the Caribbean and is still quite popular among many travelers.
