What are “Uncharted Rums”? These are rums I have not yet had the pleasure of reviewing. This is my way to highlight and promote great rums from around the world that might be unfamiliar to most rum shoppers. So until I am able to review each of these rums they shall remain “Uncharted” to me.
Ursa Major Distilling is America’s Northernmost rum distillery. This small independent distillery is located in Fairbanks, AK. They produce Alaska’s first rum.
Starting as a home brewer, Rob Borland found his interest expanding to include researching the science, art and regulations of distilling and subsequently designing his own stills. According to their website, Rob, along with his wife Tara, decided to open a distillery with the goal to provide consumers “with high quality, ultra pure, premium handmade local spirits.”
Their distillery produces Long Winter Vodka, Summer Harvest Gin, and the unique sounding Fairbanks Sourdough Rum. Here is how they describe their rum…
“Alaska’s 1st Rum! Fairbanks Sourdough Rum is a unique Alaskan experience. Instead of using commercial yeast, this rum is fermented using a sourdough that was started in Alaska more than 60 years ago. This is an honest rum, with no added sweeteners, spices or flavorings. Enjoy Alaskan history in every sip.”
If you find yourself in Fairbanks, drop into Ursa Major for a tasting tour at 2922 Parks Hwy. Faurbanks, AK 99709 or call (907) 457-1070.
