Founded in 1860, Gruppo Campari is a global beverage powerhouse with more than 50 premium brands in its portfolio. In December 2012, Gruppo Campari, finalized their expansion of their rum portfolio with their acquisition of Lascelles deMercado & Co. Limited, parent company of J. Wray and Nephew. The well-known Jamaican rum producer J. Wray & Nephew has been producing Jamaican rum for nearly 200 years. They produce their namesake rum as well as the globally known Appleton Estate, Appleton, Sangsters, as well as Coruba.
“Since 1962, CORUBA has been produced by Wray & Nephews, the best known rum producer in Jamaica. The blending and the bottling for the whole of Europe still takes place in the Rum Company in Basel, however, which has become a part of the Haecky Group in the meantime.
Coruba Rums are produced “through an intricate process of distillation in both column and pot stills, each flavor of Coruba individually combines the very best handcrafted Jamaican rum with all-natural tropical spices and natural fruit flavors.”
Coruba Pineapple
Presentation
Coruba Pineapple comes in a clear bottle with iridescent labels that allows buyers to see its colorless, white rum.
The front bottle label includes an large, sun burned palm tree with a tilted pineapple above a shadowy and bold Coruba name plate. This imported 100% Jamaica Rum is bottled “with natural pineapple flavor” at 21% Alc./Vol. (42 proof)
The front also includes a small label on the bottle neck. It proudly proclaims itself “The Rum Co. of Jamaica…Est. 1889”.
The back label states
The sweet tastes of the tropics is captured in this delicious rum that drips with real Pineapple flavor
We start with our fine handcrafted rum and then add the essence of all-natural pineapple for an easy drinking experience that’s ideal over ice with a splash of orange juice.
Making good things happen since 1889.
Aroma
This rum has a sweet warmth with a light pineapple sent. After breathing for awhile, I noticed this aged Jamaican Rum has a bottom-end hint of dunder.
Coruba Pineapple rum is water-smooth on the palette which should be expected with its low proofage. The low alcohol content means its mellow with no burn. This is not a syrupy infused rum. It has a warmed, almost grilled, pineapple flavor that is presently sweet.
Coruba Coconut
Presentation
Just like its Pineapple sibling, Coruba Coconut comes in an identical bottle with its clear white rum.
The front label is also identical except they substituded an open coconut instead of the tilted pineapple. Its made from the same Jamaica Rum, made “with natural coconut flavor” at 21% Alc./Vol. (42 proof)
The back label states
Natural coconut flavors give this fine handcrafted rum a unique island character.
This delightful coconut flavored rum makes good times with good friends into great times with great friends.
Ideal over ice with a splash of pineapple juice.
Making good things happen since 1889.
Aroma
This rum has a sweet warmth with an even coconut aroma. After breathing for awhile, I still noted a bottom-end hint of dunder.
Taste
Coruba Coconut rum is a bit more sugary that the Pineapple. Its still quite smooth with its low proofage. It feels slightly syrupy in the mouth but it is a pleasant infusion that would probably mix well.
Conclusion
I think both of these rums fit perfectly within the industry standard from a few years ago but I think the days of low-proofage, infused rums is waning. Many new infused rums are shipping at a higher proofage (around 70 proof) as see with the new Captain Morgan Infused rums.
